The story of the little girl in which Buck artistically fell in love part II

As I thought I better take the short cut over a level covered with garbage I was surprised when a bunch of girls suddenly shouted over to me, gesticulating wildly, "Caution, caution, don't do that !! " on Khmer in my direction. The surprise became panic, as the whole level of garbage began to wobble and I realized, that just the upper layer of garbage was dried again after a massive monsoon rainstorm and everything lower was a meters thick yucky marshy mass of toxic silt. Every breakthrough would have been a sure entrance into the garbage hell Cambodia without any chance of return. OK, it was an adventure and I was content, I had collected a whole lot of data of potential garbage girl candidates anyway.

It came the time as Buck and his team came back to Cambodia and I proudly got my index out with all garbage girl candidates. What made me a little bit uncertain, was the fact that Buck put the picture of little Srey Toy, he had taken with his I phone, as a desktop picture on his laptop.
"I want this one !!" the master had got into the head. I suspected what meant this for me. Garbage dump! "3 times I'll still go there, Buck. If we then haven't found her, we forget the trash ok?"….

The story of the little garbage girl in which Buck artistically fell in love and because of whom I spent my weekends on the Phnom Penh garbage dump

Hi guys!
We already told you a lot about Detlev Buck's journeys in our clips and reports.
During one trip to Cambodia he went to a garbage dump, where he met a little girl he wanted to have badly in his film. How he managed that and what Jan Müller had to go through to make it happen, is written down in the following text:

It was going at the moment in June 2008. I'd been in Cambodia for four years already and so I was of course very predestinated to guide my new friends from Boje Buck, producer Jan, development chief Wenka and the boss Bucki, through some well selected areas of the country, which could have become possible film locations for the shooting, well, location scouting. After struggling with our motorbikes through small, idyllic Cambodian villages for a couple of days, a particularly romantic location had to be investigated on this day: Phnom Penhs garbage dump. Thanks to “durchzechter” night, of course it was our turn a little later than wanted, the sun was almost already in the plumb line in the sky and this means in Cambodia that this becomes very hot here. Everyone was on the Phnom Penh garbage dump for the first time and Buck came to indulge himself immediately in this and remembered his unique childhood in the German countryside when he used to dig in the waste on a nearby garbage dump at that time, wasn't that glorious!!

One must imagine this extraordinary location like this:

Tourists or filmmakers? Impressions of the 1st locationtour in Cambodia

They look like funny tourists, but they’re bad-ass filmmakers on the quest for locations.

I was lucky. Because of a long term knee injury of screenwriter Ruth Thoma I was allowed to participate on Bucks second journey. Actually this would have been the trip of Jan Brandt, the production manager, since it should be already about concrete preparations for the production and location scouting. He arranged various appointments with filmmakers. The first meeting was with Sovichea from the Bophana Center, he was going to be our line producer.

For our first location tour we headed to country. We agreed on motobikes. Jan Müller our man for everything brought his own – including his girlfriend Siyan. At the evening before we rented two more bikes, which took us several hours and drinks, among others because Jan Brandt, as production manager committed to money, wanted to negotiate a good price and didn’t want to be confused by touristic generosity. A strength he could maintain until the end of the shooting. Sithon, the Cambodian location manager picked us up the next morning, jumped on the bike behind Jan and off we went.

The highlight for me was the village on the mountain. As I sat on the bench and was looking over the country I could feel for a moment why some want to stay.

the long way finding the leading actress

How difficult it was to find an actress who would be able to embody the real Sreykeo you can see here in this video. The two casting directors Freddy Schäfer and Astrid Rosenfeld chat about their work in France and in the USA.

Have fun watching it and stay balanced!

Casting of the main actors David Kross & Apinya Sakuljaroensuk

From the beginning David Kross seems to be the right cast for the role of Ben but the process of finding the right main actress was very difficult! The casting took place everywhere in the world and several caster looked for the right person. The whole process and each step of the Casting you can read now in the blog. Enjoy and stay tuned!

Conspicuous about the story of Benjamin and Sreykeo is that it is a story about two young people who fell in love with each other right at the beginning of their life. They were not yet stuck in one of these crises in life where everybody yearns for change, determining settings of direction and fixing.
This especially affects the European Ben, who can and wants to afford the luxury to try out what he can make of his life. In contrary are the coercions of Sreykeo.
Back to David- Detlev Buck did something what he normally never does: He asked David, if he could imagine to play the role Ben, off-handedly, without any casting. And David for his part gets into this adventure, without any casting, off-handedly, just because he seems to be the right one.

Next to the director Detlev Buck, David and the real Sreykeo (in the middle) you can see some of the girls who should be Sreykeo, coming from different parts of Germany and France:

Part III of DETLEV BUCKs diary and his first journey to Cambodia

Today you can read the last part of Detlev Bucks private diary written on his first trip to Cambodia. See how Casting in Cambodia is and what Detlev Buck thought about the project on his trip back home.
Enjoy and stay tuned!

Wednesday
I’m moving shortly into the Riverstar and then away to the country. Return in the evening. Another bar opposite to the hotel. No new insights there, or no, I met this Belgian guy, who isn’t attracted to Cambodian women, because he’s missing the intellectual conversations. It’s too simple for him, long-term. A new point of view. The intellectual difference.

Thursday
With the location scout through the slums, along the old railway, a good location for the movie. My favourite photo is blurry. Then to a beautiful pagoda, of which my favourite monk is the head of. He would also act in the movie for two days. At the arrival he and a couple of monks are waiting fort he English teacher. Next to the very beautiful old pagoda is a jail where to Khmer Rouge time people basically sat in a hole.
Couldn’t even make a photo of it.
At the evening: Nico’s birthday. The Khmer like to clink glasses and drink insanely fast.
A little bit like on a wedding and they also like to take pictures incredibly much. I feel sick and I have to go home.

Part II of DETLEV BUCKs diary and his first journey to Cambodia

Today you can read the second part of Detlev Bucks private diary written on his first trip to Cambodia. Impressions of visiting miniature slums, watching movies in a cinema and backpacker live...
Enjoy and stay tuned!

Monday
We drive into La Building where Ben and Sreykeo used to live and I need to say that every European gets totally out of the line here. The women- you could assume it’s Sreykeos mother- earns money by concatenating documents, each for 90 Riel. Per day she earns one dollar, therefore she needs to sublease. They offer me a plastic chair, while they sit on the floor.
While sitting there I’m thinking, oh Ben you really got yourself into a different life. When I told Nick I want to go into La Building he immediately said: but not alone. I don’t think you get a blow on the head, but due to black despair of the people the one or other can get lost sometimes.
After a while of translated conversation, I ask if I am allowed to come back to make some photos. The mother of seven children nods and I try to give her a bill, she refuses, but when I tell her that it’s for her children, she accepts smiling. It wasn’t really necessary, but I think about staying for a night there, once. The shooting permission seems to be difficult. Government wants to pull the building down next year in July. It is a black spot- a miniature slum. With everything: shops, haircutters etc.

DETLEV BUCKs diary and his first journey to Cambodia

In the next couple of weeks you will find extracts of the diary BUCK wrote on his journey!
Today you can also find some insight on BUCKs preparations for his first trip to Cambodia.
ENJOY!

FIRST PART OF DIARY

Saturday
Right at the beginning at the airport I got a SIM card from Sreykeos brother- he calls himself “The monk”. It's quite funny, if there is always a man in orange next to you.
So the monk goes back to his pagoda and we go for dinner to Ceangmys Restaurant. Later we go into Sharkys, where you definitely see that the UNO and American soldiers brought the bar culture to this country. All in all it’s like a hard rock café with an old man/ young girl audience- and not to forget pool. I feel bored and we go to a Cambodian disco, called Sparks. The rich people amuse themselves here, but quite funny. The young men dance together and the girls dance in one group- they rarely dance together. I feel like Dirk Nowitzki, I am the only European.

Finding a script writer

Here’s another part of our history-rediscovery:

We want to talk with Ruth Toma about the story and the screenplay. Buck absolutely wants a woman to be part of the development, so he as a man will not dominate the story. Ruth is a very experienced author and has always insanely much to do, because she’s fast and good, thus all we need. Before we lose too much time by thinking about it, I send her the book to find out if she’s even interested in the story. I don’t know her, since the cooperation between Buck and her date a couple of years back. On the phone she seems bright and organised and funny because I don’t have to say much, she knows Buck…

The Licensing of "Wohin du auch gehst"

Here we continue with our story of how SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT began. Wenka continues:

August 2007. After the meeting I’m immediately calling the publisher and I have the feeling that the publishing representative is happy about my phone call. I’m also looking forward to the collaboration. Tobia is assuming the contract negotiations. That’s pleasant, because there you have to talk about money instead of stories.

Now we have the honour to get to know something about the contract negotiations between our legal adviser Tobia and the Fischerverlag:
