My first Day

Hamburg, Heart of Coldness

Saturday was the beginning of the shooting in the cold city of Hamburg. The newly additional Hamburg crew is much exited about their “first” shooting day. In contrast to them the experienced Cambodia travellers are concerned about their health…considering they all need to handle a drop of temperature of about 30°. But also my first day on a film set starts pretty cold. It was just me and the over punctual catering waiting at 6:40am in the dark cold.
But luckily it gets warmer when we start the preparation inside. However, once we are in the building in which we shoot the scenes that take place in the publishing company, for me a big confusion starts.

Apparently no one seems to know where to park their trucks and vehicles and where to set up the equipment. But worst of all, they all seem to expect me to know these mysterious things. But my colleague and after a minute of consternation me accustomed to the speed of the events and finally everyone found their place....and I realized that even when everything seems to be a big mess, it is well prepared and I don’t need to throw myself into panic.
It seems like there are a million things to do at the same time: set up information signs and garbage cans, give directions, answer questions, take care of the extras, organise beverages and so on... Therefore it gets mid-afternoon before we have time to realise that all these people around us are actually shooting a movie. At about 12am I get the first view of director Detlev Buck.
But then there comes lunchtime and I start to wonder how the shooting in Cambodia might have been.
Even I had a good preparation in advance; everything was new to me on set. The result of my first day is a lot of questions, a lot of running and one close look at the actors and the camera. I hope next day will be calmer, at least now everyone knows their ways around the building, but you never know what’s gonna happen.
