From the beginning David Kross seems to be the right cast for the role of Ben but the process of finding the right main actress was very difficult! Conspicuous about the story of Benjamin and Sreykeo is that it is a story about two young people who fell in love with each other right at the beginning of their life. They were not yet stuck in one of these crises in life where everybody yearns for change, determining settings of direction and fixing.
This especially affects the European Ben, who can and wants to afford the luxury to try out what he can make of his life. In contrary are the coercions of Sreykeo.
Back to David- Detlev Buck did something what he normally never does: He asked David, if he could imagine to play the role Ben, off-handedly, without any casting. And David for his part gets into this adventure, without any casting, off-handedly, just because he seems to be the right one.

So David only had to come as a partner to the Casting. Especially the search for Sreykeo was very intensive. And every time Buck had to mention that he never casted somebody without a casting before- and that he will never do it again- because this doesn’t correspond to his way of working.
We met many young women, in America, France and Germany. Only when we did the Casting in Bangkok and Apinya entered the room we had the plan worked out.
Apinya wore a small chain around her ankle, which tinkled in a tender way. We instantly went silent and just watched her. As she sat on the sofa it was still silent and she performed the hotel scene with Buck and Jan for the first time. Totally different partners, but she did not get confused. After that Buck asked her to do the Skype call when she tells Ben about her medical condition, which she didn’t prepare in advance. She just spoke straight and simple into the camera. After that there was a moment of silence, which extended more and more. Everybody just waited until she ended the call like it was written in the book. She waited for Buck to cut the scene, because she didn’t see the last sentence, which was on the next page. The tension increased and nobody could interrupt this moment. Then we knew that we found Sreykeo.
Very soon we organized a meeting between David and Apinya and our first impression was confirmed. There we had two young people, who fell in love under hard and conditions and struggled and fought for their happiness. And there we had the two young actors, who made us believe it. Finally!

Thank you for your comment and your entitled question! We understand your demand and would like to give an answer for all who had the same question in their mind already.
The director Detlev Buck as well as the producer Claus Boje faced up with the Khmer culture intensively and got a deep insight into the daily life of the Cambodian people due to the permanent contact with the real Sreykeo.
But as we are not making a documentary but a feature film about love between two young people, we had to look for the best young actor and actress. Very at the beginning David Kross was clear for Ben because we had worked together with him on another film already. And then we started the casting for the girl. Castings are always very hard as you may probably know. When you have seen for example all the talent shows you can imagine how hard the situation is. Not only for the candidates, but also for the jury. And searching for a real feature film is not a show but even harder and a careful decision need to be done. Who is the right one? Who can “be” Sreykeo so that we believe the story, the character and their love? As you may have read we were looking for a leading actress all over the world - also in Cambodia. As the girl must be very young – around 18 – and have experience in acting we didn’t find so much response all over the world, but especially in Cambodia.
After a lot of castings we found Apinya – a wonderful young girl with an incredible talent for acting. We discussed the fact that she is not Cambodian but as she seemed to be the perfect embodiment of Sreykeo, we decided to work with her and David. Also the real couple, Sreykeo and Benjamin, were convinced of the acting couple David Kross and Apinya Sakuljaroensuk and that they could represent their story in the best way.
Making movies is also making art- and this should exceed boarders…. bringing cultures together and bring joy to everyone while watching a wonderful love story which could happen to everyone, everywhere in the world. At the end, I would like to add that we fortunately found a lot of supporting actors and actress from Cambodia who represent an essential part of this movie and characterize it. We hope this movie will show the world that Cambodia is a great country for shooting movies, not only with the human resources they have, as well as the actors and actress.
Hi producer and director of same same but different. This film is great that it was shot in Cambodia. But there is a problem in casting. Why did you cast an actress who is not really belonging to Cambodia? She is Thai. It is very wired to get actress (Apinya) from another country and assume Apinya is Khmer lady. In reality she is Thai. She even can not speak a single khmer word. Why not choosing Khmer actors? Or do u think Cambodian acting is poor? if so there is no value to watch this film.
