Happy Khmer New Year- Year of the cow!

While we are still busy with the post production in Germany, all Cambodian celebrate Khmer New Year right now. Kim Sophea who was also involved in the production describes the tradition of the Khmer New Year and the way of celebrating it.

“Today is the last day of Khmer New Year- the Year of cow. We celebrate this ceremony (14th, 15th, 16th of April ) to accept the new angel from Paradise. The name of new angel this year is Voreak Kyeak Sa Tevy, the 3rd daughter of Kabel Mohar Prum, the king of Angel. Like every year, we prepare some fruits, drinks ( no beer! ), flowers... and decorate our house with a light ( in front the house ) to offer this to our new angel and pray them to get a new success, happiness, be rich and to live in peace...
We have 3 different days of the Khmer New Year:
- 1st day: is for accepting the new Angel
- 2nd day: we can go to the pagoda to offer some foods to the monks, stay at home and have a party with family...
- 3rd day: we call Voreak Leurng Sak

The last day is an amazing day... We can go to the pagoda wash the Buddha and bring some water from the Buddha to wash ourself or wet someone else. We can also stay at home and wash our parents...( to beg for pardon for the bad things which happened the last year ). It's a very funny day, everybody enjoy the spectacle with the water ( Actually it's a good idea to celebrate this ceremony during the hot season ). For a whole week, we enjoy the water, the washing and traditional games...
For my family, mostly we spend our time to do the party at home, we went to the pagoda and we also went to see the concert nearby the beach.
On 20th, everybody is going to restart work...That´s my news from the Khmer New Year.”
