Have you ever been on a backpacker holiday?
Being inspired by Benjamin Prüfer and also interested in a little adventure we went to South Africa for checking out this backpacker thing.
We travelled and worked in South Africa so that we dare to say that we got to know a little about living in South Africa.
Our first impression of the hostel in Durban was: no luxury (even for a hostel) but a special, almost magic atmosphere. The African people were open minded and special. In the beginning their caring attitude towards “strangers” can be confusing, but after an adaptation-phase we enjoyed it. People on the street share your enthusiasm about a local football club and give you helpful advise about things and places to avoid.
We never imagined how slow a cashier can work on a Friday evening when there is a queue of nearly 30 people waiting. Or how many car park staff members it takes to lift a rolling gate. It took nearly 15 minutes and 3 people to get the car in. But Gordon, another backpacker, told us already at the first night, that there is no hurry in Africa. So we actually should have known better…
But we also experienced the total opposite of dealing with time: beside that we had a great time, working at Talent Campus/ Durban International Film Festival showed us that there can be a different working speed in Africa.
Working in this familial atmosphere was really impressive: all the interesting experts from all over the world plus the 40 talents which solely came from Africa were so ambitious and brought in such great film ideas into the pitchings. Thanks to Peter and Monica Rorvik and the whole DIFF team and Talent Campus team.
We only made it to a single screening but going into this movie was definitely a right decision. It was the one, being awarded as The Best First Feature Film, The Best South African Feature Film adding on Denise Newman, who was playing the leading character, got the price for The Best Actress. SHIRLEY ADAMS by Oliver Hermanus offers an undoubtedly moving and stunning story.
